Fire broke out, mid-day, near a residence south of Reno and spread quickly due to gusty winds of 40 to 60 miles per hour. In this semi-rural area, many of the properties were home to livestock and pets, and a large number of owners were at work. CERT volunteers were called upon to assist in several capacities. Those who responded as part of the Animal Response Team assisted with the rescue and containment of pets and livestock until owners could reclaim them. Some CERT volunteers assisted at the Red Cross Shelter for evacuated home-owners, and others provided information to the public through the 211 Call Center.
